Snag at PHL’s Customs kiosks angers travelers

Getting through U.S. Customs checkpoints can be irritating at peak travel times, but some passengers arriving at Philadelphia International Airport got an extra dose of angst this week.

On Wednesday, Philadelphia airport officials said they were still testing the 24 kiosks to iron out kinks and determine how the technology can reduce waits and improve screening times.

“It was a system glitch,” airport spokeswoman Mary Flannery said. The network problem required a reboot, the first since the self-service touch screens were installed Sept. 18.

The kiosks’ technology reads the passenger’s passport, photographs the traveler, and prints out a receipt that must be presented, along with the passport, to a Customs officer when leaving. The agent may ask a few questions.

“The woman in front of us did it five times before it would work,” Spivack said. “You get a little printed receipt, which replaces the card you filled out on the airplane, which they gave us anyway,” she said. “After you do this, you go see a border control agent anyway, who looks at your passport. So what did they accomplish here?”

In the past, Vecna has received sole source contracts to upgrade and maintain its proprietary system. It appears from the RFI that the VA may be going in another direction with regard to the openness of the VetLink platform. Per the contracting documents: “The interoperability of the CH initiative’s suite of programs is a high priority for VHA.” The RFI indicates a desire for the kiosks to be supported in the cloud, use HTML5 responsive design for mobile presentation, and have an interface consistent with other Connected Health services.

The VA awarded Vecna Technologies a contract to develop VetLink in 2010 and deploy the system to VA Medical Centers and Community-Based Outpatient Clinics. By the end of 2014, about 4,500 freestanding kiosks, 540 desktops and 331 wall-mounted systems will have been deployed.

Wait, Microsoft Is Not Killing The Surface RT Lineup?

Microsoft’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) tablet venture hasn’t exactly been a financial success. The software giant took a $900 million write down last year due to poor Surface RT sales, and thus far, its Surface division has lost $1.7 bil

Thus far, Microsoft hasn’t made it clear as to what exactly it means by unifying. But from what it appears, unifying probably means that Windows will share common APIs across all platforms – something that will allow apps to be cross compatible with Windows Phone, Windows RT and Windows PC.

Point to be deduced here is that Microsoft intends to continue with its Windows RT and ARM-based Surface tablets

This move makes operational sense because Surface RT singlehandedly commands about 14.5% share of the Windows tablet market – far higher than Surface Pro’s combined share of 2%. Discontinuing the ARM-based line-up would not only destroy this market, but also discourage OEMs to build Windows RT-based tablets in future.
