ATM Machine – NCR Signals Massive Makeover to Banking with Highly Secure Cloud-Based ATM Android Software Platform

Press Release today from NCR announcing new cloud-based platform Kalpana

NCR’s Kalpana™ software transforms the ATM channel, introducing ground-breaking security designed to eliminate malware and reduce total cost of ownership by up to 40%

DULUTH, Ga., April 15, 2015 — NCR today introduced the biggest change to the way an ATM operates since the self-service banking channel was invented nearly 50 years ago. NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR), the global leader in consumer transaction technologies, has launched Kalpana software, an enterprise software platform that moves ATM software and operations to the cloud.

Kalpana software runs ATMs remotely, initially through a thin-client ATM including an Android operating system, and is designed to eliminate malware, enable rapid deployment of new devices and ATM services, reduce costs by up to 40 percent, and create amazing customer experiences. Kalpana software also seamlessly blends into existing banking and IT infrastructure, connecting to existing ATM networks and other consumer-facing channels to allow transactions and services to be shared and re-used elsewhere. This dynamic allows financial institutions and independent ATM deployers to run a combination of conventional ATMs and ATMs driven by Kalpana software.

“NCR’s Kalpana software is the most disruptive change to the ATM ecosystem in decades. Business and consumer applications are increasingly turning to enterprise or cloud-based solutions that reshape security and enable fast, nimble and dynamic customer experiences,” said Andy Heyman, president, NCR Financial Services. “Kalpana software is ideal for financial institutions and independent ATM deployers looking to improve security, quickly advance service delivery through technology, and reshape their cost to serve.”

Cardtronics – the world’s largest retail ATM owner/operator – has plans to pilot the Kalpana software and thin-client Android ATM at locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, beginning later this spring.

Traditionally, ATMs have run on thick-client, PC-based software and hardware technologies physically found in the ATM. When compared to other consumer channels, such as online and mobile, this legacy PC architecture is more inefficient, expensive and complex. These challenges have become heightened following recent industry issues related to security and compliance. Kalpana software is more secure than traditional ATM software because all software updates are originated and controlled at the server level.

NCR estimates that Kalpana software can reduce the cost of running an ATM network by up to 40 percent. For a bank or ATM operator running a network of 100 ATMs, Kalpana software could reduce the total cost of ownership by $540,000 to $800,000 a year by breaking free from the constraints, expenses and security procedures of existing ATM technology. Kalpana software greatly improves agility, helping bring new ATM services to market twice as fast as before, while also significantly decreasing the cost of:

  • Deploying new
  • ATMsSecurity updates
  • Power management
  • Paper receipts and other consumables
  • Remote management via cloud-based data flow
  • Support for dispute resolution

Thin-client ATMs

The Kalpana software is part of an enterprise platform that can deliver transactions and services to traditional ATMs with Windowsoperating systems, as well as new thin-client ATMs. These ATMs can be either NCR or non-NCR branded. In order to maximize the value of the software, NCR is simultaneously launching a new thin-client solution: the NCR Cx110 ATM. The ATM looks dramatically different than a traditional ATM, with a sleek, curved interface on a thin bezel. Its 10-inch touchscreen replaces the traditional pinpad, and integrated biometrics and cameras provide ATM operators and consumers with the latest in security and user experiences.

Cardtronics will use the Kalpana software to drive Cx110 ATMs in its network.

“We look forward to learning a great deal from our pilot program deployment of NCR’s Kalpana software,” said David Dove, president, North American Business Group, Cardtronics. “As Cardtronics continues to innovate on behalf of its customers, we’re intrigued by Kalpana’s proposed benefits around product development, security and cost.”

The Cx110 ATM uses tablet technology in combination with cloud technology to move control and security of ATM transactions to the deployer’s enterprise infrastructure. The NCR Cx110 ATM includes minimal client software to run the ATM. The vast majority of the bank or ATM operator’s software stack is located on enterprise servers. This new approach will reduce the cost of operating ATMs, by allowing software maintenance and upgrades to be controlled in a centralized location and providing secure automatic updates, avoiding costly visits to each ATM.

The Kalpana software also will lead to the type of innovation found in mobile devices. Currently, new services can take months or years to bring to market as operators navigate through a myriad of vendors, including processors, switches, ATM vendors, regulators and software makers. By operating as an enterprise services hub that integrates with an ATM operator’s transactional and information systems, the Kalpana software can introduce new services at twice the speed of today at a much lower cost.

Uber’s Breathalyzer Kiosk Offers a Free Ride Home (If You’re Drunk Enough)

A marketing stunt by Uber’s Toronto-based team appears to be going down well with the folk there, but hey, it involves free rides, so what’s not to like? The company’s marketing team clearly enjoys coming up with novel ideas to grab the headlines – in 2013 it teamed up with Home Depot to deliver Christmas trees direct to homes, and before that it offered on-demand ice cream trucks in several cities.

DMV kiosk – BMV kiosk draws curious to Westerville supermarket

The state’s first vehicle-registration self-service kiosk is proving quite a draw at a Westerville grocery store. Merritt Kimball of Worthington recently drove to Marc’s supermarket, 111 Huber Village Blvd., to sample the machine.

Kiosk users just swipe their driver’s license and credit card. The machine then provides registration stickers.

A total of nine self-service kiosks are planned as part of a statewide one-year pilot program allowing motorists to renew vehicle registrations and obtain license-plate stickers without having to stand in line at BMV offices.

Like all mobile wallets before it, Apple Pay struggles with retailers

47 percent of Apple Pay users were denied by a participating merchant, study says.

One piece to the puzzle that might keep banks paying into Apple’s platform is that customers seem to use credit cards more often on Apple Pay. According to Phoenix, 82 percent of Apple Pay users linked a credit card to their accounts, and 53 percent linked a debit card. “Among those that linked both a credit and a debit card to Apple Pay, 67 percent reported that the credit card was the first-card—thus becoming the default card.” Phoenix wrote. “56 percent rarely or never change the default when making a purchase.”

That behavior is interesting on a number of levels, not least because when a credit card is used, banks get higher interchange fees and consumers are better protected from fraud by federal credit card regulations. The only party losing out is the retailers. (Well, until they pass the costs back on to the customer). “Banks always prefer cardholders utilize credit for the higher interchange the banks receive,” Sloane wrote to Ars. “Consumers often pick credit over debit for higher risk transactions since credit has greater protections under [Regulation] Z. Mercator consumer data indicates that many smartphone owners are not confident that the smartphone is safe for payments, which may incline them to enable credit cards before debit cards (or maybe it’s for the rewards!).”

kiosk patents – Amazon patents show new ways for shoppers to pick-up and check-out – GeekWire

Amazon has filed several patents recently that show that the e-commerce giant continues to be interested in the world of physical retail. Over the past few months, the company has experimented with a number of different… Read More

The first patent, outlining a kiosk management system, was filed by Neil Ackerman, who conducts product management and strategic invention at Amazon, according to LinkedIn. In 2014, Ackerman received the highly coveted “Just Do It” Award, presented by Jeff Bezos. Only a couple of dozen people have received this recognition, according to his biography.

The second patent, regarding retail check-out systems, lists multiple inventors, including Steve Kessel, an Amazon SVP, who we reported last month had returned from a long sabbatical to work on a super secret project. It still isn’t known what Kessel, who is known for developing the company’s first e-reader, is doing, but perhaps this filing sheds some light on it.

Reds food vendor rolls out self-serve beer machines at ballpark

The machines, produced by DraftServ Technologies and set up at 10 locations throughout the stadiums, allow fans to purchase cards in $20 and $100 increments to buy Anheuser-Busch products by the ounce.

Outside the ballpark, the stored-value cards will be sold at retail stores in Greater Cincinnati and can be used throughout the season, said Don Dierig, Sportservice’s district manager.

Sportservice tested the DraftServ system by setting up two kiosks during the 2014 MLB All-Star Game at Target Field in Minnesota. The Cincinnati installation is the largest rollout of DraftServ products, according to that company’s officials.

In addition, Sportservice has set up four kiosks along the third-base side of the main concourse that allow fans to order and pay for food items for express pickup at six themed concession stands, including the region’s famous Skyline Chili dogs. Those machines will be operational by the Reds’ second homestand, starting April 24 against the Cubs.

Kiosks to offer interactive experience for MHS students

SkoolLive showcased a kiosk for the Maricopa Unified School District Governing Board in their meeting on Wednesday.

Source: www.inmaricopa.com

The kiosk would be provided to Maricopa High School at no charge. The company then checks with local businesses to see if anyone would like to advertise products. The advertisement money pays SkoolLive, but a portion of the profits go to the school as well (calculated to be between $200 and $500 per month, per kiosk).

“We take full responsible for the advertising,” Warren said, “We hope local businesses will be interested and hear about us through their kids, but the responsibility is all on us. Even if we can’t get a single advertiser, we still honor the life of the contract (three years).”

The school would be able to control each kiosk separately. They would have complete control over 50 percent of the screen on each individual kiosk. The top and bottom 25 percent of the screen are reserved for advertisements. The advertisements have to be approved by the school before they are displayed on the kiosk.
