How Self-Service Kiosks Are Changing Customer Behavior

McDonalds isn’t the first fast food chain to consider giving customers more control over their orders using technology (though there’s a fair amount of debate about whether customization is really the best way forward for the struggling company). Many of its competitors have been experimenting with self-service apps and kiosks, finding that when customers use them, they tend to spend more money. Taco Bell recently announced that orders made via their new digital app are 20% pricier than those taken by human cashiers, largely because people select additional ingredients. Chili’s, after installing self-service tablets, reported a similar increase in dessert orders. Cinemark theater’s new self-service kiosks have “had concession spending per person climb for 32 straight quarters.”

Source: hbr.org

HBR talked with Ryan Buell, an assistant professor at the Harvard Business School, who studies the intersection of operations and customer behavior. It turns out that self-service technologies can pretty dramatically change what people do and how they act – though the research is hardly clear-cut on it being the best option for all businesses. An edited version of our conversation is below.

Kiosk Industry – McDonald’s Create Your Taste Menu Well Received in Downers Grove

One of just 20 nationwide, this McDonald’s employs 15 more people than the previous Downers Grove location.

Source: patch.com

McDonald’s has announced it will expand Create Your Taste to 2,000 restaurants nationwide by the end of 2015. But for now, Downers Grove is one of 20 locations in the U.S. with build-your-own-burger-via-kiosk capabilities.

The Create Your Taste menu isn’t available in the drive through, but Fenton said if someone didn’t want to order on the kiosk, they could still order Create Your Taste items from an employee at the front counter.

The customized orders take a few minutes longer to make, but with Made for You menu items still available, McDonald’s is trying to strike a balance between customers who eat and run and those who may spend a little more time and money for quality.

Outdoor kiosk : A one-stop experience for Huron County visitors

Kiosks will provide information about businesses, services and attractions.

Source: www.norwalkreflector.com

James said the goal was to place kiosks where visitors are most likely to stop. Chamber and bureau officials plan to add a couple more kiosks each year at different locations, also funded through bed taxes. Those taxes are part of a hotel guest’s bill.

James estimated the four kiosks cost $30,000 to $35,000, including the kiosks themselves and the necessary software.

The first priority is placing information about Huron County services, business and attractions into the kiosk before getting attractions in the surrounding area. James said getting details about Cedar Point, for example, could lead to Huron County visitors staying longer.

People will be able to operate the touch-screen kiosks as follows. They touch the screen to start and a directory pops up, which contains categories such as accommodations, attractions, automotive, banks, churches, fast food/take-out and services.

As users select a specific location, a map on the screen shows them where the place is located in relation to the kiosk’s address.
